Power Cuts Force Islanders to Pay for Their Own Backup

  Sri Vijaya Puram | August 23, 2026 Frequent and prolonged power interruptions across parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are increasingly affecting everyday life, with residents not only losing hours of electricity but also being forced to spend their own money on inverters, batteries and other backup arrangements to maintain basic household and business activities. For many families, an inverter has gradually shifted from an optional convenience to an essential household expense. During repeated outages, residents depend on backup power for fans, lights, internet routers, computers and other basic electrical equipment. Small businesses face similar pressures, while students struggle to study during interruptions. The burden becomes particularly difficult in the Islands' hot and humid climate. MP Bishnu Pada Ray Raises Eight Pending Issues of Islanders with Union Home Minister Amit Shah

New Delhi | 10 August 2026 Member of Parliament from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Shri Bishnu Pada Ray met Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah in New Delhi and submitted a memorandum seeking early resolution of eight issues concerning the Islanders. According to the memorandum, the issues raised cover employment, higher education, development funding, local governance, rehabilitation, healthcare and the regularisation of long-serving workers. A key demand was the introduction of a Domicile Law providing 100% job reservation for Islanders , along with an upper age limit of 40 years for Group-B (Non-Gazetted) and Group-C posts. The memorandum seeks such provisions on the lines of arrangements referred to by the MP in relation to the Union Territory of Ladakh. Ray has previously raised similar demands in Parliament.
