A digital payment receipt shared with Dweep Tulika shows a payment of ₹250 to the Municipal Council on September 11, 2026 . Residents describe the payment as a charge associated with household waste collection, which works out to ₹50 per month . While user fees form part of the solid-waste management framework, residents are questioning whether the service being delivered corresponds with what they understand as door-to-door garbage collection. When Public Space Becomes a Question of Livelihood: The Street Vendor Dilemma in Sri Vijaya Puram

Image
By Dweep Tulika There is an uncomfortable question emerging on the streets of Sri Vijaya Puram : When the administration removes a roadside vendor in the name of clearing public space, where does the protection of that vendor's livelihood begin and end? The question is not whether roads, footpaths and public land should remain accessible. They should. Illegal occupation of government land and obstruction of pedestrian movement cannot simply be ignored. But a street vendor is not automatically the same thing as an encroacher . That distinction is particularly important because street vending in India is governed by a specific legal framework — the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 — and Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council itself lists the Act, the Union Territory's 2015 Rules and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Street Vendors Scheme, 2016 among the regulations applicable to the municipality. Clearing Encroachments Is...

Power Cuts Force Islanders to Pay for Their Own Backup

Image
Sri Vijaya Puram | August 23, 2026 Frequent and prolonged power interruptions across parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are increasingly affecting everyday life, with residents not only losing hours of electricity but also being forced to spend their own money on inverters, batteries and other backup arrangements to maintain basic household and business activities. For many families, an inverter has gradually shifted from an optional convenience to an essential household expense. During repeated outages, residents depend on backup power for fans, lights, internet routers, computers and other basic electrical equipment. Small businesses face similar pressures, while students struggle to study during interruptions. The burden becomes particularly difficult in the Islands' hot and humid climate. A prolonged outage can mean several hours without fans or cooling, while households dependent on electric pumps, refrigerators and other appliances face additional difficulties. ...
