Pondicherry University Students’ Council Opposes Transfer of Andaman Colleges

Pondicherry, 25 February 2026:

The Students’ Council of Pondicherry University (2025–26) has strongly opposed the Union Government’s reported decision to transfer the affiliation of seven colleges in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from Pondicherry University.

Comrade Syed Inayat Hussain, General Secretary of the Students’ Council and member of the Students Federation of India (SFI), stated in a video message that the move could isolate students of the islands and weaken their access to quality public higher education under a Central University system.

He further pointed out that the islands already lack premier national institutions such as IITs and IIMs, and argued that the proposed decision may further marginalize students instead of improving educational opportunities.

“The elected Students’ Council of Pondicherry University strongly condemns this decision and stands in solidarity with the students and people of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands,” Hussain stated while demanding immediate withdrawal of the move.

The statement adds to the growing opposition from student bodies and stakeholders regarding the proposed restructuring of higher education institutions in the islands.
