SFI Seeks Temporary STS Bus Diversion to JNRM via RGT Road
Port Blair, September 10, 2026:
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has urged the State Transport Services (STS) to temporarily divert college-timing buses through RGT Road directly towards JNRM College to ease difficulties faced by students travelling from southern parts of South Andaman.
In a representation dated September 10, 2026, addressed to the Director of STS, SFI State Convenor Abdul Warish said students travelling to JNRM from areas including Jirkatang, Namunaghar, Mithakhari, Ferrargunj, Tushnabad, Wandoor, Chouldhari and surrounding areas were facing inconvenience due to traffic arrangements linked to the ongoing police recruitment process.
According to the representation, STS buses carrying JNRM students are currently being dropped near Netaji Stadium, after which students have to walk approximately 2 kilometres to reach the college.
SFI said the issue is particularly difficult during the morning college hours between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, when students need to reach classes on time. It also highlighted difficulties during rainfall and adverse weather conditions.
The organisation has requested STS to consider a temporary diversion of college-timing buses through RGT Road up to JNRM between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, wherever operationally feasible, until the police recruitment process and associated traffic restrictions are completed.
SFI has also requested the Director, concerned STS officials and the concerned Sub-Division JE to intervene on an urgent basis.
The representation further seeks a written response from STS clearly indicating the decision taken on the request and details of any proposed arrangements.
In an email forwarding the representation to Dweep Tulika, SFI’s Com. Vishnu Manoj said the issue concerns hundreds of students travelling to JNRM from the southern areas and requested media coverage so that the matter receives attention from the concerned authorities.
The claims regarding the number of affected students, walking distance and current bus arrangements are based on SFI’s representation. A response from STS on the request was not included in the material provided.
